Whoa Now! Android Phones Without Google?

Lately, there’s been a lot of news about Android.  From the release of Cupcake and all its implications for developers to the new HTC Magic being released in Europe, our favorite ‘robotic’ mobile platform has been in the spotlight lately. I believe we the first steps to creating a powerful platform are being taken right now. Show me some respectable sales on the HTC Magic and the new Samsung I7500, and I will be very happy with the direction Android is going in.

However, a snippet of Andorid news really caught my eye. In an interview with Techradar.com, Vodaphone (the carrier for the HTC Magic in Europe) representative Rachel Williams claimed that there will be future Android handsest without Google services.  This raises a few questions.  Will Android do well without the constant patronage and backing of Google’s name?  How far will Android grow beyond Google’s control?

These are interesting questions that only time will answer.  In the meantime, I’m going to be updating my device to Cupcake and checking out the slurry of proposed netbooks running Android. Look for more information about that in the future!
